Sparky Marcus and the cub - Chapter 11 By Sparky As they closed the front door behind them the boys started to take off their hoodies, they felt the wave of heat hit them as they stepped through the door, they smelled the fragrance of the wood burning in the fire and smiled at each other as they remembered the time they had spent in front of it yesterday, as they hung up their hoodies on the coat rack they heard Tess and Jared, Taylor's 18 year old brother, talking in the kitchen. Taylor led Marcus and Ryan to the kitchen to say hi to his mom, as they walked in Tess and Jared turned to welcome them. Tess opened her arms and Taylor walked up to her and they hugged, Marcus and Ryan stood together watching and also watching Jared. Marcus hadn't seen Jared in over a year or more, the 18 year old worked in Calgary, 400km east of Revelstoke, so he only came back home maybe once a month now as the drive took 5 hours, he lived with friends in the city and was much happier living there than in sleepy Revelstoke, as he saw it. "You grown since I saw you last" Jared said to Marcus as he came over to greet the two boys. "You grown too" Marcus replied smiling. "Guess I have... how you liking it up here away from the town?" Jared asked feeling a little nervous. Jared was trying to be nice, he knew he had been a dick in the past to Taylor and had all but ignored Marcus previously, but he had grown up and changed since then, he wanted to show Marcus and Taylor he wasn't like he used to be anymore. "I'm glad dude... and you must be Ryan" Jared said reaching over and ruffling Ryan's hair. "Yep" Ryan said not sure what to say. "Quite the adventure you had from what I heard... you doing ok now?" Jared asked warmly. "Yes thank you... I'm ok coz Taylor and Marcus saved us" Ryan said smiling. "I heard that too... we are all very proud of Taylor and Marcus" Jared said smiling and meaning it. Taylor looked up at his mom questioningly, he didn't understand why Jared was being nice, he had managed to avoid his brother the last few times he came home, so this change in attitude from him was confusing and Taylor really didn't trust it. Tess smiled back at Taylor reassuringly, she knew that Jared had changed a lot since spreading his wings and working away. She knew Jared missed home at times and that had allowed him to think about his relationships with his family members. She had seen this with Parker, her eldest son when he moved away, she saw Parker go from having no time for his younger brothers when he lived at home to missing them when he moved away, now she was seeing Jared going through the same change. Being werewolves made growing up more challenging for the boys, there were expectations to meet and everything seemed to be competitive. They played hard and could be short tempered, many fights had been broken up by Tess and Shawn as Parker and Jared had been growing up. But that was normal for cubs, in the old days that was how they learned to be strong so they could survive, it was how they learned defensive and offensive skills, but these days that was far less important. They world, at least for them was much safer and calmer. Taylor had been quite different growing up than his brothers, he avoided fighting as much as he could and was much more gentle than they had been. Shawn had seen this a weakness at first and worried about Taylor, he loved his son and didn't want him to be vulnerable and get hurt, he was driven by instinct to try and make Taylor stronger to help him survive. But as Shawn had got older he was realising that being the strong aggressive alpha type was less important than it used to be. Like many parents he too had softened with age. "We sure are proud" Tess said smiling down at Taylor, "So tell me what happened" Jared said interested to hear their story, "Go sit down and we can eat while you talk" Tess said wanting to encourage them to spend time together. Taylor still with some distrust in his heart led his friends to the lounge taking the bowls of soup with them that Tess was handing out. Soon they were sat down and eating while telling Jared what had happened to Ryan and his dad and uncle. Marcus and Ryan warmed up to Jared quickly although Taylor still struggled to accept this change in his brother, years of being teased and pushed around left him with much resentment towards Jared and also Parker. His older brothers didn't understand the effect they were having on their little brother at the time as Taylor was much more sensitive than they were, they would fight and ten minutes later would be over it and friends again, but Taylor was not like them, he was more affected and found it hard to move on and forgive. After an hour or so everyone was getting on well and even Taylor had relaxed some, Tess had tidied up in the kitchen and asked Taylor to take out the trash, Taylor grabbed the bin bag from her and carried it out through to the attached garage, to the bins on the far side of the two car garage, the noise of the rain and wind assaulted Taylor's ears as the metal roof acted like a drum skin amplifying the heavy rain drops, the bins were kept in the garage as the wind and snow, when it came, made keeping them outside a pain. As soon as Taylor had gone to take the trash out Jared got up and sat next to Marcus and Ryan. I know I haven't always been the best brother to him but I do care about him... so thank you" Jared said earnestly. "Its ok... he is my best friend after all" Marcus said unsure how to respond. The more she listened the calmer she felt, it was clear at least that Marcus and Patrick would protect her families secret. However, she couldn't ignore that these mistakes were born out of love for Marcus and it was clear that Marcus and Taylor had formed the bond of mates and would be together till they died. That being the case, at some point they would have made the decision to tell Marcus in the future about everything, so at best that action had just happened sooner than it should have. As for Patrick, if there was ever a friend that she and Shawn decided to tell, it would have been him. During Taylor telling his mom about how everything happened, she became more aware of the depth of the feelings between them, ignoring the wolf issue it was all quite cute she thought.
